about amoc
I have always loved sketching and drawing and with my
arts degree behind me I ventured into a jewellery shop in
Australia where my goldsmithing career began. My tutor was
a gemmologist and his very keen interest in the world’s natural
wonders of gemstones soon rubbed off on me.
I then moved to Ireland, where I continued my training
as a goldsmith with another keen gemmologist, before training
with the Crafts Council of Ireland.
After finishing as a goldsmith I trained within gemmology
and diamond grading.
My jewellery is mostly very simple shapes with flowing forms
but a crisp edge, with a strong influence from my Scandinavian
background. I find inspiration from nature and architecture,
picking out a simple detail from for example a shadow on a leaf
or a carving in an ancient church arch. This shape then gets
sketched over and over again until it becomes what I was
looking for! I never know why it is right - it just is… The final
drawing just has a soft flowing movement that pleases the eye.
I choose the gemstones for their beauty. This does not always
mean perfection. There are an incredible amount of natural stones
available all over the world and sometimes their inclusions can add
excitement and conversation. Nature is fantastic, and as much as
I love having the control to create a piece to how I want it, I also
love the way nature shows us, that we are not in control.
Sometimes I move away from the smaller pieces and participate
in Fashion Shows and exhibitions. It is always a challenge to move
past the everyday border and create something a little bit crazy.
Something you would not wear doing your grocery shopping, but
looks great on the catwalk and lets me live out some crazy dreams.
When I design my jewellery, for myself or for you, it is the whole
process that makes the piece. Finding out who you are, what you
like and what message you want to convey. This is what makes
each piece personal.
